Support groups of various kinds have existed for years. For many people, these have proven to be beneficial in providing a healing process. Believing this to be true, both in observation and personal experience, when my son-in-law lost his father to the prison system, in August of 2007, I suggested a support group.
Unfortunately, after weeks of research, I found nothing that supported this type of loss in the State of Michigan. With my background of twenty years as a volunteer in a variety of grief support groups, and watching the devastation this had caused to him, his wife (my daughter) and their son, I eventually decided to start my own grief support program specific to the needs of those with an incarcerated loved one. “Hope 4 Healing Hearts, Inc.”, with lots of prayer, guidance and encouragement, began in October 2008, with eight strangers coming together, seeking the hope for internal peace from their heartache, shame and embarrassment.
